UK–India CETA

India's UK opportunity has changed.

The UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, in force since 15 July 2026, is a wide-ranging pact spanning around 30 chapters covering goods, services, investment, government procurement, digital trade, intellectual property and professional mobility. For Indian businesses, it replaces years of tariff disadvantage with a stronger, more predictable bilateral corridor for trade, credibility and customer access.

On goods, 99% of India's exports to the UK now enter duty-free or at reduced tariffs, covering nearly the full value of bilateral trade. Labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, marine products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods and processed food gain the most immediate relief, with several duty eliminations running as high as 70%, making Indian-made products meaningfully more competitive in the UK market.

The agreement also opens around 137 services sub-sectors, including IT and ITES, professional, education and business services, with more than 75,000 Indian professionals and over 900 companies expected to benefit. A companion Double Contribution Convention exempts Indian employees on temporary UK assignments from National Insurance contributions for up to five years, reducing the cost of sending people to establish and run a UK operation.
